Das Kiner Haus

November 2021

I’m apparently becoming known as an artist who works in the Bavarian idiom. Nothing wrong with that. I loved creating this piece for a client whose name I am keeping quiet until next year. Working deeply with rosemaling was a bit of a challenge, but a fun one. This style makes me extremely happy, and I can’t wait to work with it more.

Holiday Trio

October 2021

Samuel James and his husband run Bach ‘n Alien Farms (the convergence of a love of space and classical music), and celebrate three major holidays with fun and frolic: Halloween, New Year’s, and Easter. Samuel was a big fan of my mid-century modern style and wanted his holidays to reflect that, with pumpkin carving for Halloween, mimosas and pancakes (and ducks) for New Year’s, and egg coloring for Easter. Could I do that? I could do that.

Vegetables Sampler

Veggies

October 2021

JP LaFond reached out, looking for a gift for his personal trainer. He wanted it to look like a cross-stitched sampler, featuring the trainer’s mantra, “Vegetables are not a sometimes food.” One of the most exciting aspects of graphic designer is learning new skills when you are called on to do so. I took a crash course on designing cross-stitch, and JP was thrilled with the results. Me, too.

Bar Mitzvah Pass 4.jpg

Jake’s Bar Mitzvah

October 2021

My client wanted a “travel” icon for his son’s upcoming bar mitzvah. I tried a few “classic adventure” themes that weren’t quite working, until he told me he wanted something more in my mid-century modern style. I knew exactly what he wanted, and when I sent it to him, he, his wife, AND his son enthusiastically loved the design. I loved creating this.

Happy Holidays from Okinawa

October 2021

Okinawa Holiday Card

My client told me he liked both my mid-century work AND my work on tropical themes. Based on my work on Kat & Joshua’s holiday card, he wanted more figurative work representing his whole family. He asked for even more detailed faces and he was very happy with the result. I was, too!

Kat & Joshua’s Holiday Card

September 2021

Kat Holiday

Every year, Kat reaches out to me to construct her holiday card. The first year, I worked in mid-century theming. The second year, I gave her a Bavarian holiday. This year, I challenged myself with some mid-century figure drawing, working hard to achieve that mid-century family holiday look. Kat was very pleased with the result, and I was elated to have made such a personal and fun card for her.

Bold Sips

August/September 2021

Bold Sips
Teapot Pour Pass 7.jpg

Robin Dunlap wanted a logo for her Bold Sips business as she was transitioning from a wine-only menu to a more robust selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Something elegant but not stuffy. I worked hard to balance energy, tone, intent, and color to make Bold Sips a striking new logo that feels fresh but also classic.

Edit: Robin further wanted some new designs for her upcoming event, wanting to add some Alice in Wonderland whimsy to the programs and materials. I was able to create some new “bold sips” designs, including painted red roses and a “Drink Me” decanter (find those on my Graphic Design page). The teapot and teacup, with elements of the “Bold Sips” logo, is shown here!

Scientific Method

August 2021

Bill Bondank reached out to me and wanted a version of “F*** Around and Find Out” that applied to the scientific method … and that would be appropriate for middle schoolers. As a teacher, Bill wants his students to apply the scientific method to everything, to get messy on the road to presenting empirical facts. He also wanted me to take a very mid-century approach; I decided to look to science and math textbooks from the 1950s and 1960s, wanting to capture the flavor of the time and still make it fun. Bill loved it, and told me he’s going to shape his entire semester on this graphic. I’ve rarely been more proud of my work!

Kim Logo Color.png

KIM Logo

July 2021

Kim Hanley wanted a new logo for her RPG company - something clean and modular. Immediately, I got to work, wanting to try out some new 3-D techniques I’d been learning that I thought would be perfect for what she wanted. My goal was to make sure the three letters of her name - K I M - were obvious, cool, and felt like they could link up to any number of facets and constructions, much like an RPG! After a lot of trial and error, we ended up with this, a design Kim really loved.

Magic For Less Block

The Magic for Less Travel

June 2021

When The Magic for Less Travel company reached out, wanting to freshen up their logo, I got right to work. Striking a balance between whimsey and professionalism can be difficult, and it’s sometimes hard to pull off in a single logo. However, after a lot of hard work and an abundance of ideas and creativity, the folks at MFL loved my logo. “Thank you again for working with us in this process,” they said. “I really appreciate it and we are excited about the new logo!” I couldn’t ask for higher praise!

Queen of Plymouth County Beer Label Pass 2.jpg

“Queen of Plymouth County” peach Sour Beer Label

May 2021

I’ve been fascinated with craft-brew beer label art for a while now, so when a couple-to-be asked me to make labels for their home-brewed wedding beer, I was all about it. The name comes from a Dropkick Murphys song, so I wanted to create something vaguely reminiscent of a Murphys logo, but without taking away from the newlyweds. The response: “That’s perfect. Love it.” Those are the best days.

Heathens Homecoming Link

May 2021

Nuçi’s Space is a non-profit in Athens, Georgia dedicated to preventing suicide, with a focus on musicians. The band Drive-By Truckers (who plays a HeAthens Homecoming weekend in Athens at the 40 Watt every February) is a huge proponent of Nuçi’s Space. The band’s fans - HeAthens - have worked to help raise money and awareness for the Space, and have become so intertwined that the webmaster of Nuçi’s reached out to ask me to make a special link just for a HeAthens segment of the site. I was asked to highlight the connection of the fans to the band and the space. They seemed to like what I came up with, and I love being able to give back just a little to this community that means so much to me.
